Traceroute Questions Answered

1. There are 18 hops.

2. Average = (X / 18 ) + (Y / 18 ) + (Z / 18 ) / 3 => 2269 + 2463.7 + 2203.7 / 3 = 2312.13 is the average millisecond journey from the network tools website to the primary curtin web domain.

3. The IP Address of curtin.edu.au is 134.7.179.53 as shown above.

This is mostly a refresher for me as I did a unit called applied networking and communications at my previous university. It still amazes me today that such an ad hoc system can work and to the user it works as if flawless but the truth is far from that.

If I get the network-tools website to perform a traceroute to curtin.edu.au again it gives me a slightly different result the fact is that background Internet static, congestion, peak times all play a part its like having a car on a empty freeway with traffic lights that are green most of the time but the occassional red light can go up and cause a minor hickup or a region wide breakdown.
